Review: LG UP870 Region-Free 4k Ultra-HD Blu-ray Player

If you’re ready to get into the 4K Ultra-HD experience, the Region-Free LG UP870 might be the perfect player. With a relatively low price for a 4K player, there’s only one thing it lacks, and that is Wi-Fi with streaming media capability. However, if you already have a smart TV, you really don’t need app functionality from a Blu-ray player. Since you’re purchasing a 4K player you obviously already have a 4K Smart TV, which means the UP870 is a great buy and will help you save some hard-earned cash. Let’s take a look at what this player offers.

4K Ultra-HD Plus Up-Scaling
Featuring full 4K Ultra-HD resolution, the UP870 is ready for both 4K Ultra-HD and 3D disc playback. It can also play your old DVDs, and will upscale non-HD discs to Full 1080p resolution for improved quality. For Blu-ray discs that are not Ultra-HD, the 4K upscaling feature provides the best resolution available, delivering a quality very similar to Ultra-HD. It’s also HDR compatible, ensuring the finest luminosity for a improved level of depth and clarity. Whatever you’re playing, you’ll experience the best clarity possible thanks to LGs latest technology.

Region-Free Playback
As a region-free model, the unit we’ve reviewed has been professionally modified after the factory and is not available in department stores. This gives the player the ability to play any disc from any country in the world – regardless of where you’re using the player. It will play DVDs from all regions (0-8), and it switches regions automatically. Just pop in the disc and play. It will also play Blu-ray Discs from all regions (A, B, and C) and only requires the press of a button to switch regions when playing foreign discs.

Worldwide Voltage and Internal Pal/NTSC Conversion
The region-free UP870 comes equipped with worldwide voltage, eliminating the need for a voltage transformer and allowing you to use the player with any voltage – from 110 to 240 volts. You can use this player anywhere in the world, no matter what the voltage is. It will also work in your yacht or RV. Just switch the setting on the rear of the player to the proper voltage and you’re ready to go. If you travel a lot or are worried about video compatibility, Pal/NTSC conversion has been added internally to ease your mind. This gives you the freedom to use your player with any TV from anywhere in the world without messy and costly digital video converters. You can play any disc, on any TV, from any country in the world. It’s the ultimate in Blu-ray flexibility.

Audio and Video Playback
The UP870 supports nearly every major audio format available. This includes LPCM, Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, Dolby Atmos, DTS, DTS-HD Master Audio, FLAC, AAC, WMA, MPEG 1/2 L2, MP3, and more. If you’re looking for home theater sound, this player has you covered. For video, the UP870 plays practically anything you throw at it. It will play MPEG-1, MPEG2 PS/TS, MPEG4 AVC (H.264), SMPTE VC1 (VC-9), H.265, MKV, Xvid, AVC Rec, AVCGD, M4V, WMV, 3GP, MP4, MOV, FLV, VOB, TS, DAT, and more. Not only does it play these formats on disc, but you can also use the USB port to connect an external drive loaded with your favorite movies for easy disc-free playback. There wasn’t a file type that it wouldn’t play for us, which is good news!

Connectivity
While the UP870 doesn’t offer Wi-Fi connectivity, it does have an Ethernet port for a direct, wired connection. Without streaming media, the only major use is to upgrade firmware. Again, if you own a Smart TV, you don’t really need a player that offers apps and streaming media. The player does work with the LG remote app, giving you the ability to control the player using your smartphone or tablet. There is a USB port in the front for easy access and an HDMI 2.0 output port for simple HDMI connectivity.

Overall, It’s a Great Value
Ultra-HD Blu-ray Players are not cheap. At around $299, this player truly is an excellent deal. Global playback and functionality has never been easier, and it’s never been available in 4K at such a low price. Learn more or purchase your own Region-Free LG UP870 4K Blu-ray Player today. We think you’ll be rather pleased with your purchase, and we give it a solid 4-star rating.

Review: LG UP870 Region-Free 4k Ultra-HD Blu-ray Player — 3 Comments

  1. Just wondering how well it plays back music CDs. I read another review (TechRadar) where they place the $500 Panasonic DP-UB9000 Blu-ray player (supports HDR10, HLG, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision) first but on the negative side it doesn’t play music very well. Is it the same thing for the LG? Since I will be getting the LG OLED C8 series TV I was inclined to go for the LG Blu-ray. Does the LG also support the HDR10 and HDR10+ ?
