Blu-rays players that have been upgraded to play DVDs and Blu-rays from any region in the world are generally referred to as Region Free Blu-ray players or multi region blu-ray players. These players will play DVDs from any region in the world including regions 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. They also play Blu-rays from any Zone / region in the world including Zone A, Zone B and Zone C. The 10 best players are divided into different categories. Not everyone’s needs are the same. So we have outlined below the 10 best players for specific requirements.
UPDATE: WE have seen recently many players being advertised as region free but the sellers are unaware about region free and don’t realize that it’s an upgrade. Buying from a trusted source such as 220-electronics will guarantee you get an actual region free player.
Best Value: LB BP165 / BP250 Region free blu-ray player.
This LG blu-ray player is perfect for those that already have streaming built into their TV or another streaming device such as Amazon’s Fire Stick or a Roku. Most modern tv’s have wifi and streaming regardless, so the feature is not required in the blu-ray player. The upgraded Region Free version of this player will play any region DVD, Any region Blu-ray and offers fantastic picture and sound quality. It doesn’t play the UBD 4K discs for that there is a step up player we will talk about below. But other than those things this is really the best bang for the buck. It’s a versatile player that plays many different formats of DVDs, CDs, and other discs and content from USB. Customer reviews have been excellent. The durability is true and tested as it’s been on the market for some time now and they haven’t made many changes to this model.

The Sony UBP-X700m is the newest version of this player. It’s really one of our favorites! Offers silky smooth 4K streaming/playback, fantastic HDR, and a small stature which will please those who would prefer to not have a larger, clunkier device sitting around their living room. This device also offers high-end audio playback through Dolby Atmos, a very welcome feature for those who want to have the full cinematic experience.

The Panasonic DP-UB9000 is a fantastic device that is arguably the best high-end replacement for the famously excellent Oppo Blu-ray players. With arguably the best 4K HDR quality available, tone mapping, and impeccable audio quality. This is a player meant for those who want an Oppo replacement, which is to say that it is a player for those who want a top of the line Blu-ray player that will last them a very long time. The only real downside to this player is that it is not universal- some formats are not supported, specifically SACD or DVD-Audio discs.
Pros:
- The closest thing we have to a new Oppo player
- Fantastic audio quality
- Build quality reduces vibration and interference
- Plays numerous audio and video formats
- Perfect for audio/videophiles
Cons:
- The price might be outside of the budget of some

Best Value region free 4K UBD Ultra HD blu-ray disc player: LG UBK80 Region free UBK 4k Ultra HD blu-ray player
With the ability to play Ultra HD, 3D, and Standard Blu-ray discs, the LG UBK80 is a versatile machine for what you are paying. Full 4K support, along with HDRand high-end surround sound format support, really drive home what a bargain this device is. At $250, the UBK80 provides essentially everything one could want from a new Blu-ray player, without breaking your wallet.
UPDATE: 8/10/21 – There is an updated version of the Sony UBP-X700 Region free blu-ray player with Dolby Atmos and Streaming that has been recently released. The Sony UBP-X700 is now hands down the best value over the LG players as it packs in Dolby Atmos and all the newest features and also does firmware updates via WiFI

The LG UBK90 is a Blu-ray player that is very similar to the UBK80, but with one key difference: It has wi-fi support built into the device. As a result, the UBK90 is the perfect Blu-ray player for those who are interested in the UBK80, but really wish it offered streaming support.

Best Region Free WiFi player: Sony BDP-S3700 Region free blu-ray player with wifi streaming
The Sony BDP-S3700 is a great, affordable way to turn any TV into a Smart TV. On the surface, it is a standard Blu-ray player; at closer examination, it actually features a great number of apps which will allow one to stream movies and television shows to one’s TV without any additional devices. As a result, this is a great alternative to purchasing a smart TV if one would rather purchase a larger, non-smart TV while retaining all of those features. Similarly, phone mirroring is a unique feature that is extremely useful; users can simply pull content up on their phones and ‘push’ things to the screen in front of them. This is perfect for parties or just casual viewing.

Best Region Free 4k Upconversion player: Sony BDP-S6700 Region free blu-ray player with 3D wifi streaming and 4K upconversion
The Sony BDP-S6700 is essentially a high-end version of the BDP-S3700. It fixes the problems which existed with the former, specifically it being only able to access 1080p content. Instead, this model supports 3D and 4K content, with 4K upscaling for non-4K content. This is a huge bonus, as it still provides all of the fantastic content that the former model did. The 4K support is only for upscaling content to 4K, which should be kept in mind when purchasing.

For its price, the LG BP550 is a great option for those who want 3D Blu-ray support without breaking the bank. While it lacks some of the fancier options that more expensive Blu-ray players might offer, it allows for a budget device that still lets you have the 3D experience you crave at home. It loads discs quickly and has a very responsive interface, and built-in Wi-fi lets you stream videos to your non-smart television.

The Sony UBP-X800M2 provides a great all-around device with both quality audio and video output. The sound provided by Dolby Atmos is crisp, and the video quality is always clean and stable. The addition of Wi-fi is, as always, welcome even if not needed. A particularly interesting feature to this device is that it offers Bluetooth output for audio, allowing one to use Bluetooth headphones as opposed to a speaker setup. This is great for those who want to watch movies without disturbing those around them, or those who just have nice headphones and would prefer to use them for their viewing experience. While it may not have the best audio or video options on this list, the UBP-X800M2 is sure to please with its options.

Review: Sony UBP-X1100ES Region Free 4K/UHD Blu-ray Player
The Sony UBP-X1100ES has arrived, replacing the well-received Sony UBP-X1000ES. The UBP-X1100ES is, in many ways, just an upgraded version of the X1000ES. Many of its selling points remain the same, such as its rigid construction and attention to detail in regard to preserving audio and visual quality. For a general overview of features not referenced here, check out our review of the UBP-X1000ES upon which this review is based. Changes From the UBP-X1000ES
As we stressed in our initial review of the UBP-X1000ES, Sony has sought to fill the market gap left after Oppo left the business. In short, Oppo is a company that used to make high-end Blu-ray players for audiophiles and fans of high-end video. Unfortunately, they are no longer creating Blu-ray players. These Sony devices are now the closest one can get in quality and purpose to Oppo’s high-end Blu-ray players. These are high-end devices meant to provide the absolute best sound and video quality.
Similar to the UBP-X1000ES, the UBP-X1100ES supports HDR10 and 4K Upscaling. New to this model is support for Dolby Vision and Hybrid Log Gamma HDR. This model features built-in WiFi, simplifying the act of connecting it to the internet for streaming services such as Netflix. The X1100ES can even stream 3D content, when available!
The most prominent changes seen in the X1100ES are the supported formats. Obscure formats such as HEVC and Monkey’s Audio are now supported, expanding the options that users have in regard to viewing and listening experiences. The new “Bravia” mode also enhances video quality from sub-4K videos when using a compatible Sony television. While not at all necessary, this feature does offer some incentive for using this device with a Sony television.

Review: Yamaha BD-A1060 Region-Free Blu-ray Player
Yamaha BD-A1060 is another attempt by a company to fill the niche that Oppo once filled. It is approximately the same price as its inspiration and has similar technical specifications. For those unfamiliar with what made Oppo famous, the comparison means this product seeks to provide the highest sound quality for money spent while still paying close attention to video quality. Perhaps most notable about this device is its affordability in comparison to Oppo’s outputs. This makes it a solid point of entry for newcomers to hi-fi audio/video setups.

Audio Quality
The Yamaha BD-A1060 has been constructed with audio/visual fidelity at the forefront. This fidelity starts at the device’s build quality, and it is no slouch in this regard. A thick chassis contains the BD-A1060’s internal component, a combination of steel and aluminum to provide weight and reduce vibration. To further exacerbate this, a magnetic shield separates its power supply and audio boards. The result is a device which has very little vibration. This reduces interference and provides significantly better audio output than many other players.
To further improve audio quality, there is a “CD Mode” built into the device. This temporarily reduces the speed at which audio discs spin and disables HDMI ports to further reduce vibrations. The BD-A1060 also features two channels of high-grade XLR audio terminals at its rear. This is perfect for those who wish to connect the device to other XLR-ready equipment in the vicinity. The device’s built-in Digital-Analog Converter (DAC) will be familiar to any audiophile. In short, it alters the audio signal being output and presents crisp sounds, clear sounds.
Video Was Not An Afterthought
While audio is clearly the main draw here, the BD-A1060 is no slacker when it comes to video either. Alongside 4K/UHD compatibility, the BD-A1060 also features 4K upscaling for non-UHD video. This is a fantastic addition to the device, as it provides another layer of quality to its visual fidelity. Support for 3D video is also built into the BD-A1060. This is ideal for those who have or are starting a collection of their favorite 3D films.
Miracast functionality allows users to stream content to the player through a Miracast-supported smartphone. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct allow you to stream content directly from other devices on your network. Traditional streaming services are not included, they are not missed as a result of the alternatives available. It is also worth noting that the device has Dropbox compatibility, allowing users to play content they have uploaded to the cloud storage network.
Region-Free Features
The Blu-ray player’s region-free features are phenomenal. The result is that one can use this BD-A1060 with any voltage in the world. This makes it perfect for those who travel or live outside of the United States of America. Blu-ray discs and DVDs from around the world function perfectly, great for individuals who moved to other countries or collect foreign films. The worldwide voltage feature requires nothing more than the flick of a button to switch between 120 and 220 volts. This gives owners the ability to use their BD-A1060 in North America, Africa, Asia, or Europe with no need for voltage conversion. We found that its internal Pal/NTSC conversion offered compatibility with nearly any television. This Blu-ray player is ready-to-go and comes equipped with everything you could possibly need out of the box.
Other Thoughts
The Yamaha BD-A1060 is a fantastic device at this price point. The BD-A1060 is profoundly similar to Oppo players of a similar price. Yamaha fills a niche that was left empty upon Oppo leaving the high-end Blu-ray player market. Yamaha’s decision to pursue high-end audio and 4K/UHD compatibility with this device was clever. As a result, they have succeeded at the task of developing a new player of such caliber. In similar devices, audio is often considered to be the main star of the show. This is undoubtedly true here, but not to the detriment of other features. The inclusion of some streaming options, 4K/UHD upscaling, and 3D video all raise this particular player above its competitors.
